About DiY Art
DiY Art is for creators who feel the pull of their muse as a calling — a way of life as much as a way of making. It’s for the painters in their garages, the poets on park benches, the musicians with 4-tracks and open hearts, and anyone who finds meaning in the act of creation itself.
I’m Briyan Frederick Baker, and for over four decades I’ve lived and worked inside the independent creative world — as a songwriter, recording and visual artist, zine publisher, and builder of spaces for others to share their work. As editor of GAJOOB Zine, one of the earliest publications devoted to cassette culture and the do-it-yourself underground, I learned that the real art isn’t just the finished piece — it’s the process, the connection, and the courage to make something on your own terms.
Like many artists, I’ve also earned a living outside of making art. I’ve worked in the print industry as a graphic artist and helped small businesses and artisans market their passions. Those experiences have taught me that creativity extends far beyond the studio — it lives in the way we build things, share ideas, and help others bring their visions to life. Now, as I take steps toward entering retirement, I want to be free to live life fully as an artist — and to help others do the same.
That same spirit of discovery and self-expression continues here.
Why DiY Art?
In an age where anyone can publish, post, and share instantly, the challenge isn’t finding tools — it’s finding authenticity. DiY Art celebrates the messy, personal, and passionate side of creativity. It’s about making things by hand, from the heart, with whatever tools you have — whether that’s paint, tape, pixels, sound, or soil.
The DiY path isn’t about chasing trends or virality. It’s about shaping a life where making and sharing art is sustainable, fulfilling, and in tune with your creative voice.
