BandLab Hits a Major Milestone: Surpassing 100 Million Users

In an era where digital platforms have become the cornerstone of music production and collaboration, BandLab has announced a remarkable achievement that underscores its growing influence in the global music scene. The social music creation platform has officially surpassed 100 million users, a milestone that not only highlights its popularity but also the increasing demand for accessible and comprehensive music-making tools.

Founded with the vision to democratize music production, BandLab has rapidly evolved into a leading platform that empowers musicians, producers, and audio creators across all skill levels. This surge to over 100 million users, with more than 40 million joining since January alone, reflects a vibrant community of creators eager to explore, create, and share their musical ideas.

BandLab’s success can be attributed to its extensive suite of free tools designed to streamline the music creation process. Users can dive into a world where recording, editing, collaborating, and sharing music productions are made seamless, whether through a browser or dedicated mobile/desktop apps. The platform offers a digital audio workstation (DAW), vocal tuning, effects presets, virtual instruments, and mastering capabilities, all without any cost. Additionally, unlimited free cloud storage for backing up and sharing projects further enhances its appeal.

The CEO of BandLab, Meng Ru Kuok, shared his thoughts on reaching this significant milestone, emphasizing the rapid growth and the somewhat surreal nature of achieving such a large number of users. Despite the enormity of the achievement, for Kuok and his team, it’s a reminder of their commitment to providing a space where creativity knows no bounds.

Beyond the free offerings, BandLab also pioneers in monetization options for artists, including direct tipping from fans and paid album downloads. This approach aligns with the ongoing boom in the creator economy, positioning BandLab as a key player in helping musicians transform their passion into viable income streams.

As BandLab continues to expand its reach across desktop and mobile platforms, it remains dedicated to updating and innovating its features. Recent additions like vocal tuning and effects presets ensure that BandLab stays at the forefront of music creation technology.

This milestone is not just a testament to BandLab’s success but also to the vibrant and ever-expanding community of creators it supports. As the platform marches forward, it remains a beacon for anyone looking to express themselves through music, regardless of their background or skill level.

  • An Inside Look: The Day Jobs of Home Tapers

An Inside Look: The Day Jobs of Home Tapers

In the realm of independent recording, home tapers have carved out a unique and vibrant space for themselves. While their music may often be the primary focus of attention, it’s worth considering the other side of the coin: the day jobs that sustain these artists and allow them to pursue their musical endeavors.

In the pages of GAJOOB, a magazine dedicated to fostering community among independent recording artists, a diverse range of home tapers have shared insights into their day jobs. Take, for instance, Tom Furgas, an electronic music artist known for his intricate and challenging work. Despite the avant-garde nature of his music, Furgas finds solace in the stability of his day job as a computer programmer.

For other home tapers, their day jobs provide a more direct connection to their music. Lawrence Salvatore, a singer-songwriter known for his quirky and introspective lyrics, works as a music teacher. This role allows him to share his passion for music with young people while also gaining valuable insights into the craft of songwriting.

“I think my day job as a music teacher has definitely influenced my songwriting,” Salvatore says. “It’s given me a better understanding of how music works, and it’s also given me a chance to see how kids approach music.”

Of course, not all home tapers are able to find day jobs that directly relate to their music. But even in these cases, there are often unexpected connections to be found. Croiners, a tape loop artist known for his innovative use of found sounds, works as a graphic designer. While this may seem like a far cry from his musical endeavors, Croiners insists that there is a common thread running through both.

“I think there’s a lot of overlap between graphic design and tape loop music,” Croiners says. “Both involve taking fragments of sound or images and rearranging them in a way that creates something new and unexpected.”

Home taper, Don Campau, mentioned that for him, music is not something to make a career out of. He worked in the produce department in a grocery store for over 30 years and expressed no interest in pursuing music as a full-time career.

The day jobs of home tapers are as varied as the music they create. But one thing that unites these artists is their dedication to their craft. Whether they’re working as computer programmers, music teachers, graphic designers, or anything else, they find ways to balance their day jobs with their musical passions. And it is through this delicate balance that they continue to enrich the world with their unique and often challenging art.

Keeping your artistic pursuits separate from your work career can offer several advantages. Firstly, maintaining a clear boundary between your professional occupation and your creative endeavors can serve as a source of balance and mental respite. This demarcation allows individuals to fully engage in their artistic passions without the pressures or constraints often associated with a career-focused mindset.

Furthermore, by pursuing creative activities independently from their primary source of income, individuals may find a greater sense of freedom and authenticity in their artistic expression. This separation can foster an environment where creativity flourishes without the burden of financial or professional expectations, leading to a more genuine and fulfilling artistic experience.

Moreover, dedicating time specifically to artistic pursuits outside of work can contribute to personal growth and overall well-being. It provides an opportunity for individuals to explore their creativity, develop new skills, and cultivate a deeper sense of self-expression, leading to enhanced satisfaction and fulfillment in both their personal and professional lives.

Ultimately, by keeping artistic pursuits separate from one’s work career, individuals can enjoy the inherent benefits of creative exploration while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance, nurturing their passion for art without imposing the demands of a professional career.

  • In the Studio: Creating “I’m Running”

In the Studio: Creating “I’m Running”

Garrett’s motivational speeches at work inspired the creation of “I’m Running.” Capturing snippets of his voice, the phrase “I’m Running” became a central theme. Using the Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II, several freeform beats were created around a minimal melody using a stock KO organ sample. The percussion and bass also utilized stock KO samples.

Multiple renditions were performed on the KOII, eventually pared down to a satisfying result. The track was then transferred to the Tascam DP24SD, a multitrack recorder, allowing for quick recording and offloading of individual track stems via SD card to the Logic Pro X DAW.

The Yamaha MODX was also used in the creation of “I’m Running,” adding a couple of synth beds around the KOII performance. This track may serve as the prelude to a more driving piece that truly gets out and runs.

  • I’m Running

    I’m Running

At work, Garrett was in motivational mode to inspire us to get active. I sampled a bit of it as my own way of joining the melée. Think of this as stretching before an early morning run. It’s been a long night, if I’m honest. This is gonna take some prodding.

I chopped up and isolated Garrett’s voice and focused on “I’m Running” as a potential theme. I brought these into the Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II and created several freeform beats around a minimal melody on a stock KO organ sample. The percussion and bass are also from stock KO samples.

I renditioned a lot of performances on the KOII and ultimately stripped things down to a happy place and output a track to the Tascam DP24SD, a multitrack recorder my brother, Wayne, loaned to me so I could learn and show him how to work it.

I think I’m liking this addition to my creative workflow. It allows me to get something down quickly and then offload it to the Logic Pro X DAW as individual track stems via SD card.

Using the DP24SD has prompted new recordings using the Yamaha MODX and that’s used here in I’m Running, adding a couple synth beds around the KOII performance.

I may use this as prelude to a driving track that gets out and runs. Let’s see.
